There appears to be no pre-printed information whatsoever on this paper - only the details repeated above - it looks to have worn off over time as very faint lines can just be seen. David Gretton, a member of the Rootsweb mailing list informed me that Grass Lane, Ilkeston, shown on the above certificate was later renamed Norman Street. See pictures, further down this page.
The above birth certificate revealed another generation -
Francis Barrowcliffe = Mary Moon
Barry's Great Grandparents
Barry's Grandmother, Winifred Dutton's birth certificate wasn't with Barry's parent's papers but I have found her details in FreeBMD and ordered it from the GRO. This has arrived and here are the details:

On 26 October 2004, Barry, his cousin, Paul Barrowcliffe and I visited Ilkeston to try to find where Ernest and Winifred used to live. We first of all called at the local studies section of Ilkeston Library and bought two old maps detailing the streets as they were in the early 1900s. Shown below are some of the photographs we took on the way to 2 Gordon Street, Ilkeston where Hilda Barrowcliffe, Barry's mother was born. Please click on each thumbnail to see an enlarged version of each picture, a description of which appears below. Use the "Back" button to return to this page.
Pictures one and two - St Mary's Church. The church where Winifred Dutton and Ernest Barrowcliffe were married.
Picture three - Bath Street, Ilkeston, just below St Mary's Church. The relatives talked at length about Bath Street, it must have been an important thoroughfare in those days.
Picture four - Top of Gordon Street, Ilkeston where the family lived when Hilda Barrowcliffe was born.
Picture five - Number 2, Gordon Street, Ilkeston as it is today. Modernised with double glazed door and windows, and presumably pebble-dashed by the later owners of the property.
Picture six - Lower down Gordon Street, Ilkeston as it is today. Still with modernised with double glazed door but more like how No 2 would have looked in the early 1900s.
Sending for Francis Barrowcliffe's birth certificate revealed another unknown family name 'Hallam':

1851 Census
When I began researching Barry's family history, this Census entry was kindly sent to me by Neil Bowers after an enquiry I made on the Rootsweb.com site specifically for the DerbyGen mailing list -
Folio 275, Schedule 132, pg 33/34 shows the Hallam family living on Nottingham Road, Ilkeston
| Francis Hallam, Head, Marr, age 30, Lace Hand, Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Mary Hallam, Wife, Marr, age 30, Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Martha Hallam, daur, age 8, Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Robert Hallam, son, age 1, Derbyshire, Ilkeston | John Hallam, Brother, age 29, Lace Hand, Derbyshire, Ilkeston |
Here's Francis and Mary's Wedding Certificate and further down the page is the birth certificate of their daughter, Martha born "Nineteenth of July 1843" only 10 days after the wedding! The spelling of their surname on the birth certificate, though, was shown as "Horridge". There appears to be an error in their fathers' occupations in that they have been transposed i.e. Samuel Hallam was the Lace maker and Jonathan Orrige the Brick maker -

Here's the respective parents in the 1841 and 1851 Census reinforcing the theory that the father's occupation shown on the certificate were mixed up - Mary's father being the Brickmaker and Francis's father was the lace maker (1851):
This shows Francis Hallam on the 1841 Census living with his mother and father in Stanton by Dale, Derbyshire:

I need to find out what a "Berlin M." was.
Samuel and Sarah still in Stanton by Dale in 1851, their address Botany Bay:
|
Samuel Hallam, Head, aged 61, Lace Maker, born Derbys, Mapperley |
Sarah Hallam*, wife, aged 60, born Nottm, St. Marys | Robert Hallam, Son, Unmarried, aged 21, Iron Miner, born Derbys, Stanton |
Ruth Hallam, Daughter, Unmarried, aged 15, Lace Mender, born Derbys, Stanton |
Richard Hewitt, Lodger, Married, age 71, Ag Lab, born Notts, Trowell | Sarah Hewitt, Lodger, Married, age 66, born Derbys, West Hallam |
On Sarah's entry, a tick was shown in the "Blind, Deaf" column.
There is a marriage entry on the IGI for a Samuel Hallam to Sarah Hunt on 22 February 1819 at Stanton by Dale.
I have been exchanging emails with Helen Kominek who is a descendant of Samuel and Sarah's son, Robert. Helen's research can be found by accessing this Hallam link.
I think this is Mary Hallam nee Horridge's parents in 1841 with a Jonothon Horidge, Brickmaker residing in Cotmanhay near Ilkeston, Derbyshire -

and also in the 1841 Census, I found a Mary Orridge, age 22 working as a Female Servant for Farmer, Joseph Attenborough, age 45 at Gill Brigg, in the hamlet of Kimberley, near Greasley, Notts. Both Mary and Joseph were stated to be born "Out of County" - this might be Mary who in 1843 married Francis Hallam in Radford, Notts - marriage certificate shown above.
If this is the correct family, the 1851 Census shows Mary's mother, Elizabeth Horridge as a widow, still living in Cotmanhay and she's shown as a Publican, born Cotmanhay:
|
Elizabeth Horridge, Head, Widow, aged 56, Publican, born Cotmanhay, DBY |
Hannah Horridge, Dau, Unm, aged 19, born Cotmanhay, DBY | Ellen Horridge, Dau, Unm, aged 17, Glover, born Cotmanhay, DBY |
John Henshaw, son in law, Mar, age 24, Frame Work Knitter, born Cotmanhay, DBY |

this might be Elizabeth in the 1861 Census in Cotmanhay, and living with her was her daughter Ellen and her family:
|
Elizabeth Horridge, Head, Widow, aged 67, born Derbys., Ilkeston |
John Morley, Son in law, Mar, aged 33, Coal Miner, born Derbys., Ilkeston | Ellen Morley, Daughter, Mar, aged 27, born Derbys., Ilkeston |

1861 Census
Barry's 2 x G Grandmother Martha Hallam was living with her widowed mother, Mary in Evans Row, Ilkeston, prior to her marriage to Joseph Barrowcliffe:
| Mary Hallam, head, widow, age 41, Charwoman, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Martha Hallam, daur, age 17, Charwoman, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Robert Hallam, son, age 11, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Samuel Hallam, son, age 8, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbys | John Hallam, son, age 5, born Ilkeston, Derbys | William Hallam, son, age 3, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
Francis Hallam's death occurred on 21st August 1859. The cause of his untimely death at the age of 39 can be seen here -

According to the Wikipedia website "Ileus" is a bowel obstruction.
1871 Census shows Francis's widow Mary living with 3 of her children in Marehay, Ripley:

Also in 1851, living in the Parish of Ilkeston, Gallows Inn were George and Mary Ann Dutton, Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents -
|
George Dutton, Head, aged 31, a Boatman*, born Notts, Radford |
Mary A Dutton, wife, aged 35, born Derbys, Shipley |
George Simpson son, age 15, a Boatman*, born Derbys, Ilkeston |
William Dutton, son, age 10, a Boatman*, born Derbys, Ilkeston |
Ann Dutton, age 7, daughter, born Derbys, Ilkeston | Thomas Dutton, son, aged 5, born Derbys, Ilkeston | Henry Dutton, son, age 3m, born Derbys, Ilkeston |
* The writing is not very clear here and the occupation as written does look like 'Boatman' but could be Banksman. Subsequent information seems to suggest that 'Boatman' is the likely entry. Strangely, the Deaf, Dumb and Blind column was ticked alongside all the entries with the exception of George Dutton, Snr. These ticks though might be statistician's checking marks rather than denoting that the person marked was disabled in some way.
Receiving the following marriage certificate of George and Mary Dutton gave another new name - John Davies father of Mary Ann Williams (formerly Davies) - Barry's 3 x Great Grandfather and that Mary Ann was a widow! George Dutton's father, Thomas Dutton - Barry's 3 x Great Grandfather. Witness William Hallam - this could be a relative of Martha Barrowcliffe (nee Hallam) -

The marriage certificate for George Dutton and Mary Ann Williams, shown above showed another surprise - having already discovered that Mary Ann Williams was a widow - the above census shows a son "George Simpson"; begging the question - who were the parents of George?
I tried to find the previous marriage of Mary Ann but without any success, until searching on the IGI for George Simpson's birth, I found that George was christened 31 May 1835 at Ilkeston and his parents were "Benjn Simpson and Mary Ann".
I then searched on IGI for the marriage of Benjamin Simpson and found that Mary Ann Davies had married Benjamin Simpson on 12 December 1833 at Ilkeston. George Dutton was Mary Ann's 3rd Husband!
I found the baptism of George in the Ilkeston Registers on Page 187 in 1835:
|
May 31 No.1493 |
George S of |
Benj'n & Mary Ann |
Simpson | Ilkeston | Boatman | S Davenport Off'g M |
Now knowing that Mary Ann's name was Simpson, I searched for her second marriage on BMD and this was in the Sept Quarter of 1838 and the only 'Williams' listed was John - Mary Ann's second husband was John Williams. Now I need their record from the 1841 Census to see if there are any other children. I did find a death of John Williams on Ancestry.co.uk lists but trying to obtain the certificate, I was told that they could not find the entry and sent me my money back. I have ordered the parish register film for the parish of Ilkeston - this might give me more information or a date to enable me to find the certificate. After several months this has now arrived, but the early registers are very difficult to read . . . more information as and when I find any.
The following 1841 Census entry is the likely entry for George and Mary Ann Dutton - by 1841 they would have been married for only one year, the entry is for Ilkeston, Derbyshire; place Hungerhill - the Duttons appearing to be lodging with the Huckerby family:
| Hungerhill |
George Huckerby |

George is probably Benjamin and Mary Ann Simpson's son George, age 6; Willm's age was in the female column! I had to search through the Ilkeston records on Ancestry.co.uk for this entry as the enumerator has written what looks like 'Dotton' for their surname.
The marriage certificate for Mary Ann's second marriage arrived (October 2005) and reveals that John Williams was a Boatman, as was his Father, George:

I have not managed, so far, to find any record of Mary Ann and John Williams having any children.
George and Mary Ann Dutton were residing at Gallows Inn, Ilkeston in the 1861 Census:
| George Dutton, Head, aged 41, an Ag Lab, born Radford, Notts | Mary A Dutton, wife, aged 45, Housework, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Willm Dutton, son, age 21, a Labourer on Canal, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Ann Dutton, age 17, daughter, Stitcher, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Thomas Dutton, son, aged 15, a Labourer on Canal, born Ilkeston, Derbys | Emma Dutton, age 7, daughter, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
Mary Ann's son, George Simpson had left home there is an entry which could be him, in Alfreton, lodging at the home of George and Caroline Johnson; George was 21 and working as a Coal Miner.

Thomas had married Christianna Wilkinson Hornsey in 1865, Christianna had been living in Costock, Nottinghamshire in 1861 working as a General Servant in the home of Nathaniel and Mary Jackson - she was named here as 'Catherine' and her age given as 13, her birthplace More Town, Lincolnshire. Please follow this link for the Wilkinson/Hornsey family records.

Living at Marehay, Ripley, Derbyshire were Joseph and Martha Barrowcliffe (note spelling) -
| Joseph Barroclif*, head, age 46, Labourer, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire | Martha Barroclif*, wife, age 28, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Frank Barroclif*, son, age 9, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Mary Barroclif, daughter, age 7, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
| William Barroclif, son, age 5, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire | Fanny Barroclif, daughter, age 3, born York | Betsy Barroclif, daughter, age 1 month, born Ripley, Derbyshire |
* Joseph and Martha Barrowcliffe - another generation; Frank is Ernest Barrowcliffe's father and Barry's Great Grandfather.
The 1871 Census led me to another generation of Duttons and together with further certificates, other relatives -
John Moon and Ann Hardy
and
George Dutton and Mary A Williams (nee Simpson and Davies)
and
Joseph Barrowcliffe and Martha Hallam
All are Barry's Great Great Grandparents
Also found in the 1871 Census was Martha Barrowcliffe's widowed Mother, Mary Hallam living with her sons in Marehay, near Ripley:
| Mary Hallam, head, Widow, age 51, born Cotmanhay, Derbysh. | Samuel Hallam, son, age 17, Miner, born Ilkeston, Derbysh. | John Hallam, son, age 15, Collier, born Ilkeston, Derbysh. | William Hallam, son, age 13, Collier, born Ilkeston, Derbysh. |

I have received copies of several birth certificates from a 'Barrowcliffe' descendant who now lives in Australia, Janet Parker. Janet's Grandfather was yet another Joseph Barrowcliffe, youngest son of Francis Barrowcliffe and Mary Moon, Janet sent me Martha Hallam's birth certificate**. This shows:

There is a marriage on the IGI of William Moon and Martha Hawley, which took place at Kirk Hallam, on 9 August 1824. The same source provided a baptism for William Moon 11 March 1804 at West Hallam, parents Thomas and Mary Moon; and Martha Hawley baptised 31 Jan 1802 at West Hallam, parents Leonard and Mary Hawley. This of course has yet to be verified.
I have placed some of this
research on Genes Reunited and as soon as I entered William Moon's details, a
dialogue box informed me that there were several other people researching this
name. As a consequence I have been in touch with these researchers and have
been able to view their family trees and thus discovered further generations of
this Moon family:
William's parents were Thomas Moon, b c1781 at West Hallam, DBY; Thomas Moon married Mary Bridget (b c1779) on 18 Nov 1798 at Alfreton;
Thomas's parents were James Moon and Sarah Abel. By a coincidence, I was already looking through Alfreton Bishop Transcripts looking for my father's Cupit and Skevington ancestors and so was able to search for the marriage of Thomas and Mary. Above right is a photo of the entry in the Parish Church of Alfreton Bishop Transcripts and below is a transcription of the text:
| Thomas Moon of the Parish of Kirk Hallam and Mary Bridget of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns this 18th day of November 1790 by me Thos Webster. Thomas Moon, Mary Bridget her mark. In the presence of Arthur Ball his X mark and Jas Rolley. |
There was an earlier baptism in 1777 of a daughter to "John Bridget and his wife was baptized". However this page was creased, the name does look like "Mary" and the month "December" but the day was obscured. This might not be 'our' Mary's baptism and several people have discovered a Mary Bridget born 1779 in Swanwick, Derbyshire.
Also found in the Alfreton records, prior to the above entry -
| Marriage in the year 1762 John Bridget of the Parish of Alfreton in ye County of Derby and Hannah Crichley in ye Parish of Alfreton in the County of Derby were married in this Church by Banns this 23 day of Oct’r in the year 1762 by me Cornelius Horne, Vicar. Solemnized John Brigot Hannah Critchley her mark X in the presence of Matthew Farnsworth Isaac Darker the mark. |
The first mention of the Bridget name in the Parish Church of Alfreton Bishop Transcripts was the following 1685 baptism and there are many, many more Bridget family events:
|
Hannah Bridgett: Hannah Daughter of Wm Bridgett & Hannah his wife ye 11th Feb 85 |
I have placed the records I found on the web and these can be accessed via my Parish Records page.

There were other Moon
families also living in Town Street: sons William Moon, and Isaac Moon, and
Grandson, James Moon with their wives and families;![]()
and by 1871 John and Ann had moved to 2 Station Court, in Ilkeston:
| John Moon, head, age 41, Miner, born Derbyshire, Maperley | Ann Moon, wife, age 39, born Derbyshire, Shipley | Betsey Moon, daughter, age 12, Scholar, born Derbyshire, Langley | Mary Moon*, daughter, age 8, Scholar, born Derbyshire, Langley |
| John Moon, son, age 6, Scholar, born Derbyshire, Langley | Gearge Moon, son, age 3, born Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Ellen Moon, daughter, age 4 months, born Derbyshire, Ilkeston |
*Mary MOON, who later married Frank Barrowcliffe - Barry's great Grandparents. I found the baptism of John and Ann's daughter, Ellen Moon in Ilkeston St Mary's register - the baptism took place on 2 March 1871, John and Ann gave Ilkeston as their abode and John was shown to be a Miner.
Subscribing to Genes Reunited, I have been corresponding with Kathleen Woollard - after seeing this website, Kathleen wrote
"I'm related to William Moon & his wife Martha via his daughter Rebecca's son James (who I believe was illegitimate, there being no father's name on his birth certificate). James was my great grandfather, his daughter Esther Beatrice being my father's mother. Her sister Ellen was much older than her, she had a daughter Phoebe, who was really my Dad's cousin but we called her 'Auntie' Phoebe, & seeing your photo of Mary Moon was quite startling, she was the image of Phoebe! I never knew my grandmother, having died before I was born, but looking at the only photo I have of her she too has the look of Mary. I see that you also have the name Hardy in your research. Rebecca Moon married a Samuel Hardy the year after she had my great grandfather & had 4 children to him, George, Thomas, Joseph & Elizabeth. I have found Samuel & Rebecca living in Rawmarsh, 9 Albert Road, in the 1881 census with their son Joseph. Samuel was born in 1830 in Shipley Derbyshire. Have they any connection with your Hardy's ?" Samuel might be related to the Hardy family - as they did live in Shipley, I need to search the Shipley parish records for more information.
Rebecca married Samuel Hardy (Registered Shardlow Dec 1851 vol 19 page 679) - in the 1861 Census they were living in Mapperley:
| Samuel Hardy, head, Mar, age 30, Coal Miner, born Shipley, Derbys | Rebecca, Wife, Mar, age 30, born Mapperley, Derbys | George, Son, age 8, Scholar, born Mapperley, Derbys | Thomas, Son, age 5, Scholar, born Mapperley, Derbys | Joseph, Son, age 1, born Mapperley, Derbys | Mary, Daur, age 1, born Mapperley, Derbys |
Kathleen kindly sent me the two Moon family photographs which can be seen with the photograph collection near the bottom of this page.

John and Elizabeth were still in Shipley in 1851:
|
John Hardy, Head, Mar, age 53, Coal Miner, born Derbysh, Shipley |
Elizabeth Hardy, wife, Mar, age 57, born Derbysh, Shipley | James Hardy, Son, Unmarried, age 22, Coal Miner, born Derbysh, Shipley |

John Hemsley*, Head, Un, age 20, Coal Miner, born Leicestershire, Keyworth |
* The entry shows the Hardy family and John Hemsley living at the same address, but shown as separate schedules.
I believe this is John in 1871 now a widower, living with his daughter Hannah in Ilkeston:
|
Hannah Fisher, Head, Widow, age 60*, Seamstress, born Shipley, Derbyshire |
Harriet, Dau, Unmar, age 20, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire | Mark, son, age 12, Miner, born Shipley, Derbyshire |

* Hannah married Mark Fisher, and in 1871 they are shown living in Shipley and Hannah's age is shown as 44! Her father, John's age is also debatable! - IGI has a submitted marriage on 26 Mar 1838 for a Michael Fisher marrying Hannah Hardy; FreeBMD has a marriage registered at Basford, in March 1838 with a possible match of Hannah Hardy and Michael Fisher.
Looking for the death of Elizabeth Hardy on FreeBMD, there were several possibilities, but only one entry provided an age at death, this was Registered at Basford in March 1868 and the age given was 74. There was no entry on the 1881 Census for John Hardy; this could be his death on Freebmd registered Basford Mar 1879, age 80
---oOo---
I would recommend to anyone researching their family history to join one of the Rootsweb mailing lists. The people on these lists are extremely kind and helpful. For example, when I started researching these families, I joined the NOTTSGEN-L@rootsweb.com email list, and a contributor to this list, David Gretton contacted me initially with a query regarding the MOON connection to my research. David has since then kindly supplied me with the following photographs which relate to locations where my husband's family lived as revealed in various Census and certificate records:
Pictures one and two - Station Court street sign and Station Court Terrace, Ilkeston - John and Ann Moon were living in Number 2 Station Court, Ilkeston at the time of the 1871 Census. This site appears in the Erewash Borough Council Local Plan - Urban Capacity Study - Sites with potential capacity: "Station court - Two former terraced cottages. Potential for conversion back to residential use."
Pictures three to six - Norman Street, Ilkeston; the first of these three pictures is the actual site of where number 27 Norman Street would have been, now known as Blackburn Court. The second picture is now the South end of Norman Street, or at least the first of the old rows. The third picture is of 21-23 Norman Street, close to where No 27 would have been. Number 27 is where Francis and Mary Barrowcliffe were living at the time of the 1891 Census. The last of these four pictures shows the north end of Norman Street where it joins Prince Street and Ash Street.
David visited Ickleston
Library to try and establish when the numbering changed for the houses on Norman
Street. He concluded that during the 1970s when a row of prefabs and
possibly other dwellings were demolished (including No 27) to make way for
Blackburn Court, the houses on Norman Street North were re-numbered to be part
of the whole of Norman Street.![]()
As for Bright Street, all the houses on the left-hand side of the photograph were built post-1900, the 1900 map having no buildings whatsoever marked on that side of the road.
Picture seven - ; the second picture shows where Bright Street meets Norman Street. As previously mentioned Norman Street used to be named Grass Lane and this was its name at the time of Ernest Barrowcliffe's birth in 1884.
Picture eight - Picture number eight is of Bright Street - Thomas and Christianna Dutton were living at 32 Bright Street at the time of the marriage of Winifred Dutton and Ernest Barrowcliffe.
Picture nine - this rather dull picture was taken by me, at the time of our visit to Ilkeston, it shows the Albion Centre which is where Albion Place used to be - it is now a supermarket and a Leisure Centre complex. The Duttons were living at No 8 Albion Place at the time of the 1891 and the 1901 Census.
Picture ten to twelve - Gladstone Street, Ilkeston - this is where the Duttons lived when Winifred, Barry's Grandmother was born. According to David, Gladstone Street still exists, much of it was lost when the relief road (Chalons Way) was built. The first two pictures show what remains west of Market Street, the third picture, east of Market Street reveals that nothing much is left, it did continue beyond the fence, but this at the time when David took the photos, was a building site.
There is a very useful website http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/ with many pictures of this area, here are three showing Norman Street as it used to be - these three pictures are produced with acknowledgement to the above mentioned website:

Picture No.1 - Numbers 16(right) and 18(left) were previously numbered 124 and 123 respectively. These houses were demolished in the mid 1970's.
Picture No.2 - Rear of Butchers Shop at the junction of Norman Street, January 1974
Picture No.3 shows James Austin's butchers shop, since demolished. The glazed ceramic tiles under the windows depicted the story rhyme of "This is the house that Jack Built". Norman Street was known as Grass Lane prior to 1870 when it was renamed after local surgeon and Highway Board Chairman Dr George Blake Norman. (Information from "Picture the Past")
1881 Census
George and Mary Dutton were still living at 6 Park Road, Ilkeston:
|
George Dutton, Head, aged 61, a Colliery Banksman, born Radford, Notts |
Mary A Dutton, wife, aged 65, born Shipley, Derbys |
Ann Dutton, daughter, aged 37, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
Frank Dutton, Grandson, aged 16, Factory operative (Lace), born Ilkeston, Derbys |
Albert Dutton, Grandson, aged 15, Colliery labourer, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
Phoebe Dutton, Grandaughter, age 11, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
There appears to be a discrepancy regarding George's age, 10 years ago in the 1871 census the Enumerator had entered an age of 49.
I had no luck trying to trace
Thomas and Christiana Dutton in the 1881, although Phoebe, their daughter is
seen above staying with her Grandparents, but thanks to a member of the
Nottinghamshire mailing list for finding them transcribed as DALTON:![]()
Thomas and Christiana Dutton now living close to Thomas's parents at 38 Park Road, Ilkeston - but transcribed as DALTON but definitely the DUTTONS! - daughter Phoebe was with grandparents, George and Mary Ann Dutton (see above entry); looking on Ancestry.com, they have also transcribed this family as 'Dalton' - I have filled in the correction form:
|
Thomas Dutton, head, age 35, Miner, born Ilkeston, Derby |
Christianna Dutton, wife, age 33, born Moortown, Lincoln |
John Dutton, son, age 14, Needle Maker, born Ilkeston, Derby | Thomas Buxton* Dutton, son, age 8, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derby |
|
George Hornsey Dutton, son, age 7, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derby |
Robert William Dutton, son, age 5, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derby |
Emma Dutton, daughter, age 3, born Ilkeston, Derby |
Ann Dutton, daughter, age 1**, born Ilkeston, Derby |
* 2nd forename of Thomas Buxton Dutton - Buxton was the surname Christianna's mother Mary, before her marriage to William Hornsey - this family information can be seen on the Wilkinson/Hornsey page.
Regarding the above entry, I have contacted the Family Search website regarding the mistranscription of this surname, they replied thus:
"The resources are not
available to make individual corrections to the data that was extracted or
recorded years ago. We recognize there are some mistakes in the years and
spellings of the data. Fortunately, these errors represent only a small
percentage of the total database.
Those who originally recorded the information and those who later automated it
the names occasionally misinterpreted the spelling of a name (for example, a
census enumerator may have misheard the last name “Flynn” and written it as
“Tlynn” or “Plynn”). We are unable to make changes to the transcribed records as
they appear in our CD-ROM programs or online at FamilySearch Internet "
In 1881 Joseph Barrowcliffe and his family were living at Marehay Lane, Pentrich, Derbyshire - the spelling provides some difficulty once again -
|
Joseph Barricliff, head, age 53, Coal Labourer, born Nottingham |
Martha Barricliff, wife, age 38, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Mary Barricliff, daughter, age 17, Stone Pottery Works, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Frank Barricliff*, son, age 18, Coal Banksman, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
William Barricliff, son, age 15, Coal Miner, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |

Samuel Barricliff, son, age 5, Scholar, born Marehay, Derbyshire |
John Barricliff, son, age 3, born Marehay, Derbyshire |
Robert Barricliff, son, age 5m, born Marehay, Derbyshire |
*Joseph and Martha's daughter Fanny was born in York circa 1868. I wonder if we'll ever know why they were in York at the time of Fanny's birth?
I have received an email from Paul Spiby; Fanny Barrowcliffe is the 2 x G Grandmother of Paul. He informed me that Fanny married Albert Williams and they had at least four children:
| Kate Williams born 1890 | Joseph Williams born 1892 |
Martha Williams 1897-1978 |
Betsey Williams born 1900 |
Martha Williams was Paul's Great Grandmother and she married George Orme; they had three children:
| Jessie Orme born 1918 | Olive Orme born 1920 |
Betty Orme* born 1922 |
* Betty Orme is Paul's Grandmother.
The 1881 Census showed that John and Ann Moon and family had moved to Wheatley Row, Ilkeston -
| John Moon, head, age 52, Coal Miner, born Maperley, Derbyshire | Ann Moon, wife, age 51, born Shipley, Derbyshire | Martha Moon, daughter, age 24, Factory Hand, born Langley, Derbyshire | Mary Moon*, daughter, age 18, Factory Hand, born Langley, Derbyshire |
| John Moon, son, age 16, Coal Miner, born Langley, Derbyshire | George Moon, son, age 12, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire | Ellen Moon, daughter, age 10, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire | Maria Moon, daughter, age 7, Scholar, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
* Barry's Great Grandparents in 1881
I couldn't trace John's parents, William and Martha Moon in the 1881 Census; searching for their deaths I found a Martha Moon's death registered Belper Jan/Mar 1872, age 68, vol 7b page 324; and William Moon's, registered Belper Oct/Dec 1877, age 73, vol 7b, page 300.
Our current 'Barrowcliffe' family are all helping to trace the family's history and Paul and Suzanne Barrowcliffe have obtained Francis and Mary Barrowcliffe's marriage certificate, details of which are repeated here -

1891 Census
Barry's Grandfather, Ernest Barrowcliffe was 6 years old in 1891 and living with his parents at 27 Norman Street, Ilkeston:
| Francis Barrocliffe aged 28, Coal Miner, born Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Mary Barrocliffe, wife, aged 28, born Derbyshire, Langley |
Ernest Barrocliffe, son, aged 6, Scholar, born Derbyshire, Ilkeston |

this link is not working on some ISP's for some reason.![]()
Nephritis: Inflammation of the kidney
Uraemia: Excessive amounts of urea in the blood. The usual cause is renal (kidney) failure. Urea is toxic. People with renal failure become less alert, more confused and slowly drift into coma. Usually, they are pleasantly confused but can be agitated. Rarely they become psychotic.
Martha and Joseph's daughter Fanny, had married Albert Williams in 1887* and in 1891 they were living at 122 Norman Street, Ilkeston:
| Albert Williams, Head, Marr, age 25, Colliery Contractor - Employer, born Staffordshire, Bryery Hill | Fanny Williams, Wife, Marr, age 23, born Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Kate Williams, Daur, age 1, born Derbyshire, Ilkeston | Joseph Williams, Brother, age 15, Coal Miner - Employee, born Staffordshire, Bryery Hill |
* The marriage of Fanny and Albert was registered Basford Dec 1887, Fanny's name was given as 'Barrocliff' in the index vol 7b page 234. Fanny and Albert Williams are the 2 x G Grandparents of Paul Spiby.
I couldn't find George and Mary Ann Dutton in 1891 - I then searched for their deaths and found George died on 1 June 1885 and Mary Ann on 8 September 1885:

** The recording of Ann's age differs in the 1891 Census, she was born in 1879, shown as age 1 in 1881 Census; as 16 in 1891; and 22 in the 1901 - the age discrepancy in 1891 might be in order to obtain work to help support this rather large family. I've seen the actual images and the ages have been transcribed correctly.

In 1901, the Scattergoods were still living at 3 Eyres Gardens:
| Thomas Scattergood, head, age 52, Collier Stallsman Miner underground (C.Hewer), born Notts, Basford | Ann Scattergood*, wife, age 54, born Derbys, Ilkeston | Isaac Scattergood, son, single, age 19, Coal Loade? underground (C.Hewer), born Derbys, Ilkeston | George Scattergood, son, single, age 17, Printer, born Derbys, Ilkeston |

John Dutton, son, age 11, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Christiana W. Dutton, daughter, age 8, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Percy Dutton, son, age 5, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
I found a familiar name on Genes Reunited "Christiana Wilkinson Dutton" and contacted the researcher - Denis Henshaw, whose wife Janis is a descendant of John and Maria Dutton's daughter Christiana, shown in the above census. Two photographs from this branch of the Dutton Family sent to me by Janis are shown further down the page.
John and Maria Dutton's daughter Christiana W Dutton was born 11 April 1892 and married Reuben Mosley (born 1893) and they had 4 children:
| Margaret Grace b1918 | Rose Mary b1920 | Reuben Percival Charles b1924 | Clarice Mabel b1926 |
Phoebe, eldest daughter of Thomas and Christianna Dutton had married George Edwin Shaw 22 Dec 1894 and they were also living on Albion Place, at No. 15 see George and Phoebe's photograph below:
|
George Edwin Shaw, Head, age 26, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire, Coal Miner, Hewer |
Phoebe Annie Shaw, wife, age 33, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |

Caroline Shaw, daughter, age 4, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |

Another member of the Dutton family was living on Albion Place, at No. 27 - Thomas Buxton Dutton with his wife, Caroline nee Meakin who were married in 1893:
|

Henry Kurby, Lodger, aged 52, Farmers Labourer, born Barrowden, Rutland |
As in 1891, Martha
supplemented her income by taking boarders, probably from the same family of
Kirby, from Rutland.

Also on the same Census sheet was Samuel Barrowcliffe, Joseph and Martha's son, living nearby on Cotmanhay Road -
|
Samuel Barrowcliffe, Head, age 25, born Marehay, Derbyshire |
Elizabeth Ann Barrowcliffe, wife, age 25, born Barrowden, Rutland |
John Henry Barrowcliffe, son, age 4, At school, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Martha Barrowcliffe, daughter, age 3, At school, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Fanny Barrowcliffe, aged 1, daughter, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Samuel's wife could be from the same family as Martha's Lodgers - "Elizabeth Kirby, Boarder, age 15, Leather Dresser, born Rutland." shown lodging with Martha in 1891. Their marriage was registered at Basford March quarter of 1896 7b page 236; also on the same page was the marriage of Fanny Kirby to William Baker.
Martha's daughter Fanny and her husband Albert Williams were living at No.23 Thorpe Street, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston - in this Census Albert was shown to be born in Sheffield, Yorkshire!
|
Albert Williams, Head, Mar, age 38, Coal Miner Hewer, Underground Worker, born Sheffield, Yorks |
Fanny, Wife, age 32, Coal Hewer, born Yorks, NK |
Kate, daur, age 11, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Joseph, son, age 9, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Martha, daur, age 4, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
Betsey, daur, age 1, born Ilkeston, Derbyshire |
I eventually found Frank and Mary Barrowcliffe, transcribed by Ancestry.co.uk as "Banowcliffe" living at 21 Norman Street, Civil Parish - Ilkeston; Ecclesiastical Parish - Cotmanhay:
|
Francis Barrowcliffe aged 38, Miner Coal Hewer under ground, born Ilkeston, Derbys |

Mary E, aged 10, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
Joseph H, son, age 7, born Ilkeston, Derbys |
**Barry's grandfather
*Mary's father, John Moon, now a widower was residing at 167 Cotmanhay Road, Ilkeston (Cotmanhay Parish):

Searching Freebmd, I found several entries registered at Basford: a death for Ann Moon, September quarter 1899 age 59 vol 7b p99;
a marriage for Maria Moon and a John Henry White, registered Dec 1895, vol 7b page 416;
and a death for John Henry White, age 24, registered Dec 1898 vol 7b page 84. John Henry White appears in the 1891 Census at 13 Havelock Terrace, Ilkeston, a coal miner, living with his mother and father William and Mary White.

1911 Census shows Barry's mother, Hilda Barrowcliffe living with her parents, Winifred and Ernest and an unknown baby brother Frank! The address was 43 Chaucer Street, Ilkeston, Derby.
| Ernest Barrowcliffe, Head, 26, Married, Coal Miner Hewer; Worker, born Derby., Ilkeston | Winifred Barrowcliffe, Wife, 25, Married, born Derby., Ilkeston | Hilda Mary Barrowcliffe, Daughter, age 3, born Derby., Ilkeston | Frank Barrowcliffe, son, age 3 months, born Derby., Ilkeston |
|
An Entry in line 5 was crossed out - Albert Ernest Barrowcliffe, Son, age 1 month |
|||
There were extra colums headed "Particulars as to Marriage" and this was divided into 4 columns - Marital status; How long the marriage had lasted; Total children born alive; No. still living; No. who had died. In this case the columns showed:
| Married | 5 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
The enumerator had to fill in the number of people in the household, this originally stated 3 Males, 2 Females and 5 persons but this was also crossed through and amended to read 2 Males, 2 Females and 4 persons. I was stated that the house had 4 rooms. The strange thing about this entry is that Albert who was just born 4 March 1911 was entered then crossed out and a 3 month's old son Frank was shown. I've searched to see if Albert was with relatives, but so far I've found nothing.

Here are a few photographs found in the family's photo collection:
| 1 | Mary Barrowcliffe nee Moon | This is Ernest Barrowcliffe's Mother |
| 2 | The Moon Family | Kathleen Woollard sent me pictures 2 and 3 - "These are the only photos I have of my grandmother, Esther Beatrice Moon & her Aunt Phoebe, I'm afraid they're not very good quality, but then they must be nearly 60 years old! The 2 boys at the back are nothing to do with the family group, they just got in on the act apparently! Phoebe is the 2nd one in on the left, the lady at the back is one of her daughters, I'm not sure but I think the other lady on her left is my grandmother, the lady on her right being my Mum. The other picture is definitely my grandmother, who would have been your John Moon (born 1820) great niece I think." |
